Abu Minqar Island lies near the mouth of the Gulf of Suez in Egypt's Red Sea, with an elevation of about 3 metres. It is notable as the only island in the area supporting substantial stands of Avicennia marina mangrove, covering roughly 28.5 hectares, making it an ecologically significant and vulnerable coastal habitat.

Ras Mohammed National Park, at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, was established in 1983 as Egypt's first national park and covers about 480 square kilometers of desert and marine habitat. Its reefs, including the sheer walls at Shark and Yolanda Reef, hold some of the highest coral cover in the Red Sea, with over 200 recorded coral species.
